Who Knew?

January 18, 2017

I was juicing grapefruit and oranges this morning when it hit me. (Don’t ‘cha just love when that happens) Fruit harvesting and eating said fruit is something I associate with Spring and Summer. The grocery stores and farmers markets are filled with fresh, local fruit. I look forward to making fresh jams and jellies when the fruit is at the peak of tastiness. Prices are lower when the stores are able to purchase locally instead of having to import from Mexico and Chile,

Why is citrus harvested in winter then?

This is my big epiphany, citrus is loaded with vitamin C. When do we flood our systems with mega doses of vitamin C? In the winter, during cold and flu season. When are citrus fruits ready to be harvested? You guessed it, during the winter.

I live in south Texas. I have grapefruit, lime, lemon, tangerine, and orange trees in my yard. I have always thought it was so cool to be able to go outside and pick a lemon when I needed one. The fruit on these trees is usually ready to pick starting in late November and I can continue picking until February. I always have fresh lemons to use when I make my homemade cough syrup.

While I was picking and juicing this morning I kept thinking of ┬áthe words to a favorite hymn “All I have need of, He hath provided”. He spoke the tress and grasses into being on day 3 of creation and every fruit is ripe and ready just at the perfect time when we need it. How awesome is that?

Just so you don’t go away empty handed, below I have given you my secret recipe for Homade Cough syrup. This one is made with alcohol (burbon to be exact) to control the cough. (Pharmacies use codiene I use alcohol..) The lemon juice thins the mucous, and the honey soothes the throat and helps supress the cough. My family and friends are alway asking for a jar (I prepare it in a mason jar) or for the recipe. So here it is…..

6 shots bourbon

the juice from one lemon

1/2 cup honey

I pour all of the ingredients into a quart sized mason jar and shake.

When I have a cough I just take a shot of cough syrup straight and repeat until the cough subsides. (haha) I usually wait about 30 min. in between shots.

If I have a sore throat, I make a cup of hot tea and add a shot of the mixture.

Give it a try and let me know what you think.
