Description of In the Shadow of Denali
Cassidy Ivanoff and her father, John, work at the new and prestigious Curry Hotel outside Mt. McKinley. While John will be expedition and wilderness exploration guide for the wealthy tourists, Cassidy has signed on as a cook’s assistant. Both are busy as the hotel prepares to welcome the president of the United States on his way to drive in the golden spike to officially complete the railroad.
Allan Brennan travels to the Curry Hotel to be an apprentice of a seasoned Alaska mountain guide. Ever since his father’s death climbing Mt. McKinley, he’s worked to earn enough money to make the trek to the Alaska territory himself. His father’s partner blames their guide for the death of his father, but Allan wants to find the truth for himself. He finds an unlikely ally in Cassidy, and as the two begin to look into the mystery, they suddenly find that things are much less clear, and much more dangerous, than either could ever imagine.
My review of In the Shadow of Denali
I think this series about Alaska and it’s people will be fantastic if this first book in the series is any indication.
The details about the setting and what was happening historically in this area is what sets the tone for the whole book. The characters are what makes the story come alive.
Cassidy, with her optimistic outlook and sunny disposition is the perfect main character. We want her to get her happy ending. She has a loving and devoted father but no mother or grandparents to help with her upbringing and to nurture her. Her mentor, the stern Mrs. Johnson, who rules the kitchen staff with with an iron fist, has a surprisingly open heart to Cassidy’s testimonials.
Allan Brennan is the character that changes the most through the course of the story. It is beautiful to watch as he unravels not only the truth about his father’s death, but the truths a Godly man imparts to him along the way. John is the perfect person to show Allan how patient, loving and merciful God can be.
And last, but not least, Thomas. Who could not love the adorable, clumsy, Thomas? Can’t wait for the other books to find out what the authors have in store for this guy.
If you like historical Christian fiction, this is one you should pick up.
