Description of Traces of Guilt
Evie Blackwell loves her life as an Illinois State Police detective . . . mostly. She’s very skilled at investigations and has steadily moved up through the ranks. She would like to find Mr. Right, but she has a hard time imagining how marriage could work, considering the demands of her job.
Gabriel Thane grew up in Carin County and is now its sheriff, a job he loves. Gabe is committed to upholding the law and cares deeply for the residents he’s sworn to protect. He too would like to find a lifetime companion, a marriage like his parents have. . . .
When Evie arrives in Carin, Illinois, it’s to help launch a new task force focused on unsolved crimes across the state. She will work with the sheriff’s department on a couple of its most troubling missing-persons cases. As she studies old evidence to pull out a few tenuous new leads, she unearths surprising connections. One way or another, she knows Gabriel Thane and his family will be key to the answers she seeks.
My review of Traces of Guilt
I love the Thane family! They are a good, close-knit Christian family. It was nice to see the interaction between them as the story develops.
Evie is an interesting woman. She is smart, strong-willed, and ambitious. All good qualities for a detective to have. She just hasn’t figured out yet how to mix her professional live with the personal life she wants.
The cold cases that are being worked on in this story are very interesting. It is fun to watch how Evie’s mind works the puzzles. It is also cool how Dee Henderson contrasts the cool, methodical Evie to the emotional way Gabriel Thanes approaches these cases. In these particular cases it takes both methods to get results.
I am presuming since the title of the book is Traces of Guilt (An Evie Blackwell Cold Case), that there will be a series of Evie Blackwell Cold Cases. The way this story ended it did leave it open to that possibility. One of the cases was not solved. The task force was going to begin in January and Evie would be on it. Three relationships could definitely be explored more deeply as they develop more.
I liked this book. Cold cases are interesting even though the tension is a little different than something happening in the here and now. The characters are what make this book. They are the reason people will want to buy the next book. People will want to know if Karen’s bad guy show up. They will want to know what happens between Josh and Grace and if something other than friendship develops between Gabriel and Evie.
I know I want to know. If you haven’t read any other books by Dee Henderson I suggest you give her the O’Malley Series and Shield of Honor Series a try. These are some of my favorites. Let me know what you think.
As always, thank you Net Galley and Bethany House for sending me a copy.
